On July 1st 2007, England introduced a new law to make virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England smokefree.
Smoking in public places and the workplace is dealt with as a public health matter within Great Britain. The Department of Health takes the lead on this in England, in Wales this is a matter for the Welsh Assembly Government and in Scotland it is the responsibility of the Scottish Executive.
The smokefree law has been introduced to protect employees and the public from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.
