Welcome to the area dedicated to issues that apply to the Sub Post Office / Retail Sector. You will also find general health and safety guidance in the 'A-Z'. This information is relevant to all industry groups regardless of activity. From here you can also access our 'Ask the Expert Facility'.
Sub postmasters are not Post Office Ltd (POL) employees, but instead have a contract with POL to provide services using their own premises and staff. Most sub postmasters run their post office business under the same roof as another retail business. In urban areas this is often a newsagent or stationery business. In rural areas it is typically a village shop. Post offices offer a wide range of services.
We have tried to represent issues, regulations and guidance in a way, which will be clear and easy to follow. Together with other sections on the site, we hope this will enable you to work more safely in your industry.
Your work place may not seem risky but all companies, whatever their industry type, however small, need to identify hazards and the level of risk in their business. Without a doubt, your employees are your most valuable resource and good health and safety practice will ensure your workforce, and your business, is well cared for and protected.
Health and safety isn't just about complying with legislation, it's about preventing illness, injury or even death in the workplace. Taking practical and preventative action can save lives and save your business money.
Not only will you have employees to take care of but members of the public who frequent your premises making use of your services as well as contractors and visitors.
As well as the basic key regulations and Statutory requirements, we aim to provide content that is specific to your activities. All areas however should first be identified and risk assessed and hazards identified. Risk assessment is the first point of call for all good health and safety management.
You will also find useful documentation in our 'Download' area, for:
- risk assessment,
- policy,forms
- guidance and
- checklists
All content can be downloaded, completed and then uploaded into your 'Document Manager' area creating a Health and Safety Portfolio for safe keeping.
Should you have any specific queries you can always 'Ask the Expert'.
